The Ted Talk above entitled How to Spot a Liar by Pamela Meyer discusses the ways to spot a liar and why people lie. In the first part of the talk Meyer discusses why people lie and goes over a few statistics. According to Meyer " people lie more to strangers, extroverts lie more than introverts, men lie eight times more than women and if you are married then you lie to your spouse every ten interactions" (Meyer). Pamela also mentions that lying is a cooperative act and that that it takes two people to lie. You are essentially working with the liar when you believe the lies. Next Pamela displays a video of Bill Clinton and points out all of the red flags , such as distancing and formal languages. The rest of the Ted Talk continues to go over the steps to spot someone's lies.
In Catcher in the Rey the main character Holden often lies and even calls himself a "terrific" liar. after reading this book and watching the Ted Talk I can really see where the statistics are really are true and present in Holden's interactions with people. In the book Holden stops a diner for breakfast where he meets two nuns and sparks a conversation. While Talking Holden explains that he goes to Pencey and is a catholic, neither of which are true. Another time where this lying i present is when Holden meets a former classmate's mom on the train and sparks another conversation. Holden explains that he is friends with this women's son , which is not true, and then proceeds to say how quiet and shy the boy is, which is also farthest from the truth. He lies so much to stranger about himslef and others but when he talks to people who he knows and has a history with he doesn't seem to lie as much. This proves the statistic that people lie more to strangers.
In conclusion people seem too lie a lot. They more to strangers than people they know and men lie more than women, says Pamela Meyer. she also explains that it takes too lie. This is very prevalent in Catcher in The Rey's Main Character, Holden Caulfield. He also proves the fact that we lie more to strangers, which can be seen in most if not all of interactions with people he does not know. Holden is the perfect of example of liars in America.
