An Ode To Envy, a Ted Talk with the topic of what is jealousy and why we get jealous. Speaker Parul Sehgal opens up her presentation with a personal anecdote from when she was around eight years old and became really jealous over her classmates. Parul brings up back to a time when a new girl came to her school, and Parul was so jealous of this girls shiny hair, nice pencil case, and especially her impeccable ability to spell that she devised a somewhat evil plan. In order to go through with this plan Sehgal stayed way after school and proceeded to change the grades of the new girl and all of her classmates. the rest of the Ted Talk discusses jealousy in relation to literature and how when we are jealous it causes us to make up a story about someone that most likely didn't happen. Sehgal also gave a really good quote about how jealousy works, she explains that " jealousy causes us to look with intensity but not with accuracy". Meaning that when we are jealous of someone we notice everything that they do but do not get the full story before jumping to conclusions.
I think that this Ted Talk most relates to The Crucible because jealousy is what what most likely started the Salem witch trials in the first place. Through the research I have done in class and the documents that i have read, jealousy seems to be prevalent in this community for numerous reasons some of it was over land and some of the evidence even points to the majority of single women accusing married women of being witches. This very plausible as the same situation was shown in The Crucible, Annabelle was having an affair with John Proctor and then went into the woods to put a curse on his wife. Another example of jealousy in this book can be seen in act one when Mrs.Putnam was jealous of Rebecca Nurse's abundance of kids and then accused her being a witch.
The relation all of this has to the American dream is pretty obvious. Everyone wants to have something of value whether its a big house, nice car, or expensive clothes and when someone has these items that we want it can cause some jealousy. This jealousy can take you over and cloud your judgement which can cause us to do bad things.it caused Sehgal to change her classmates grades and Annabelle to put a curse on the Proctors. It also causes people in america today to do horrible things. As jealousy is the number one reason for spousal murder proves this point even further.
